What KNIGHTBORN is

KNIGHTBORN is a special project for the Knight family. It is a public window onto a private vault: names of those who have passed, the open questions we refuse to close with a briefing and a place for cousins to send a name or a photograph. Nothing is published until it is accepted.

The voyage

In late 1883 the passenger ship Marlborough dropped anchor at Port Chalmers. Aboard were two young boys, Sidney Alfred Knight and Alfred Cyril Knight, with their mother Jeanie Knight and father Sidney Herbert Knight — the man the family still calls the Black Sheep.

The boys faced early hardships, including a period at the Dunedin Industrial School in 1886. The New Zealand house that reaches us today took root when a drover recorded as Sydney Herbert — held in the family as Sidney Albert — married Elizabeth Templeton Rogerson. Together they raised nine children whose descendants now live in New Zealand, Australia, the Philippines and the United States.

Cuth — Henry Cuthbert Knight — was born after his father had died. He married Gladys Arthur. Their children include Peter, Vicki, Stephen and Tony. Tony married Rosie. Simon, James and Kate are their children. Simon keeps this archive in Perth.

What we will not flatten

One identity conflict stays open on purpose. The English son born 3 February 1877 is not automatically the Gore man who died 16 November 1922 aged 42. Certificates outrank memory. Memory is kept and marked as memory. A briefing does not close a case.

A global house

What began as a Southland household is now a connected family in New Zealand, Australia (Perth and Queensland), the Philippines and the United States — including Tim Knight’s English work in Seattle, credited, not copied. Family history should not live in dusty cardboard boxes. KNIGHTBORN is the living home for the story.
